The sun beat down on Brent like the iron fist of God as he walked along the side of the road trying his damnedest not to get hit by passing traffic. After puking in DJ’s truck, apologizing profusely, and promising to clean the mess up, he’d pretty much chickened out of any more conversation with her and ran inside the hospital after Derrek. When he’d gone into the waiting room to give moral support to his best friend, Derrek just shook his head and pointed toward the seats in the opposite corner. “Don’t even think about it, bro. Don’t even come near me.”
It wasn’t long before the other patients started to murmur and cover their noses. He knew when a crowd had turned against him. It wasn’t the first time he’d had to make a speedy exit. With few options left, Brent decided that walking off his hangover wasn’t the worst thing he could do. Except he’d forgotten how far the Double D Ranch was and how freaking hot it was for June.
Just then a truck zoomed by. The bass thumping, windows down, and some punk kid threw an empty beer can at Brent, barely missing his head. “Get a job, you bum!”
Brent didn’t say a word. Just shook his head and groaned. From rock star to bum in less than a week. Stellar, dude. Stellar.
The mile and a half walk back helped clear his head, and had him sweating out the last of the fireball whiskey. By the time he’d stumbled into the bunkhouse his shirt was soaked through, his head pounding, and he was in dire need of some coffee.
Yes, he needed to go and grovel at DJ’s feet, but that was going to have to wait until after he had time to make himself feel human again. He stripped off his clothes on his way to the bathroom and jumped in the shower while the water was still cold.
Christ, couldn't DJ have picked a better time to leave him stranded than during the middle of a heat wave? He stepped out of the shower and donned some clothes. He checked his phone to see what time it was. It was after eight in the morning. Late enough that he was pretty sure he wouldn’t encounter anyone in the kitchen. He had no desire to set eyes on DJ, at least not right now. He knew he’d have to apologize again, but he just wasn’t up for the sharp side of her tongue or that condescending arch of her eyebrow that literally took him from zero to ten on the pissed-off scale in five seconds flat.
The darkened kitchen was a welcome contrast to the overly bright, overly hot day outside, and Brent immediately appreciated the quiet stillness of an empty house. The left over scents of bacon and eggs still lingered, but the thought of food turned his stomach rather than making his mouth water.
He started to open and close cabinet doors trying to find where DJ stashed the medicine.
